UPDATE — 31ST OF MARCH

Dear future Delegates, Student Officers and MUN-Directors,

Today the Dutch Government held a press conference on the regulations that will be taken due to Coronavirus COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). The Prime Minister said that the schools will remain closed until the 28th of April. Furthermore, traveling is also discouraged until the 28th of April. There is a realistic chance that the regulations will be extended once more. In the week of the 20th of April, we will hear more from the Dutch Government. We will keep you posted on this page.

Yours faithfully,
Ghorzang Rahimi

ORIGINAL POST

Dear future Delegates, Student Officers and MUN-Directors,

The world currently has to deal with the pandemic of 2020, otherwise known as Coronavirus COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2. This virus brings us, unfortunately, many negative consequences.

First of all, I would like to start by telling you that we – the staff of LEMUN 2020 – are working hard to make sure LEMUN 2020 goes as planned, even though the current situation brings many uncertainties. As you might have seen, we plan to host this year’s LEMUN on the sixth, seventh and eighth of November. It is our expectation that COVID-19 will not pose a problem around the month of November. However, there is a disclaimer: this is merely a prediction with no backing evidence. In the future, this page will be used to give you updates about the situation and how the conference of this year will be affected by it. Please keep checking this page in the future.

The Government of The Netherlands has closed the schools until April sixth. Tuesday March 31st The Government will inform us whether or not this “lockdown” will be extended. Furthermore, all events have been canceled until June first. As our conference is in November, we do not see a reason to either cancel or postpone our conference (disclaimer). We will keep you updated about further actions taken by the Dutch Government on this page as well.

As mentioned before, the current situation brings us many uncertainties and we understand, if you – as a foreign school – might be hesitant to participate in this year’s conference. We understand, if you can not make up your mind to participate in April, when the registration forms will go online. Because of this, we decided to turn the registration into a declaration of intent. Because of this change, you will be able to show your interest in participating in LEMUN 2020. If necessary, you will also be able to withdraw your declaration of intent with no financial obligations until a deadline in September 2020.

Lastly the staff of LEMUN 2020 wishes you all health and wellness possible. These are strange times and in times like these we need to take care the most. Not only take care of ourselves, but also take care of those in our direct environment, who are most at risk. We at LEMUN believe we can bring change for the better and we can be little lights that bring guidance in these confusing times. This is why we would like to ask you a favour: take a moment to look around, to see who in your environment needs help and care the most – such as elderly people who do not dare to go to the supermarkets. Take a moment to help those vulnerable people. For a lot of people, these times are scary times, but for the vulnerable these times are frightening. By taking care of those vulnerable people, we make it seem a little less frightening for them.

Yours faithfully,
Ghorzang Rahimi
