Introduction
East and Southeast Asia has become one the biggest markets for methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs. Record amounts of synthetic drugs continue to be seized in the region, but the versatility of synthetic drugs and the flexibility of the manufacturing unfortunately makes it very difficult to get control of the situation. The porous borders make it easier to traffic drugs as well as move manufacturing sites across countries, a lack of testing laboratories and experience make it difficult to identify and track the different types of synthetic drugs and a lack of cooperation and legal controls between countries allowed organised crime groups to take advantage and solidify their position.
The committee should discuss ways to effectively disrupt the manufacturing of illicit synthetic drugs, taking into account the flexible nature of the production of synthetic drugs.
