Introduction
The oil and gas industry is faced with ever stronger demands to clarify the implications of energy transitions for their operations and business models. Furthermore they are increasingly required to explain the contributions they can make to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. These increasing social and environmental pressures on many oil and gas companies raise complex questions about the role of these fuels in a changing energy economy, and the position of these companies in the societies in which they operate. Against a backdrop of rising greenhouse gas emissions and an ever more urgent need for an energy transition, today’s oil and gas companies should be viewed as not only part of the problem, but also as a crucial part of the solution. The committee should focus on the ways in which the oil and gas industry can help with the energy transition, and how to ensure that they do.
