Indigenous people around the world have been marginalised by colonial and imperial legal systems, in particular with regard to land ownership and the use of common natural resources such as rivers. The committee should seek ways to redress this imbalance and to reconcile their traditional views of use and possession of such resources with modern legal systems often based on originally Western European ideas of ownership
