The situation in Myanmar

Home / LEMUN 2022 / Committees and issues / The situation in Myanmar

Myanmar has had a tumultuous few years. It faced international condemnations for violence and genocide against the Rohingya minority, though it denied all accusations.

In February 2021 the military in Myanmar seized power after the results of a general election resulted in a landslide victory for Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. Since then there have been massive protests and strikes against the military regime, to which the regime has responded with violence.

How will the committee respond to the actions of the military regime? Should the action of the Myanmarese military have consequences for the membership of Myanmar within ASEAN?
