Though journalists are protected as civilians under the Geneva Conventions, their essential role in providing access to relevant and independent information merits further international commitment to their protection. This has once more become evident due to the deaths of several reporters in the recent conflict in Ukraine and the difficulty of obtaining reliable and unbiased information about that conflict. The committee should debate what additional safeguards are appropriate for journalists in conflict situations.
