The recent invasion in Ukraine by Russia has put the question of NATO membership on the agenda in several countries. Currently Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia have formally expressed their membership aspirations, and other countries, such as Ireland, Moldova and Serbia, are debating formally expressing such aspirations. Applications by Finland and Sweden are currently under consideration of the member states.
Russia has demanded that NATO withdraws to the Cold War-era borders and has expressed it would view further expansion as aggression towards Russia. The council will have to discuss if they want to expand NATO membership and if so, under what conditions.
