The production and subsequent smuggling of narcotics has deeply destabilising effects on various countries within the Americas. Driven by demand mostly in Europe and North America, the production and transportation of drugs is a large source of revenue for organised crime syndicates. To grow the raw materials used these syndicates often extort and terrorise local farmers and authorities. When central governments try to regain control this often results in a violent conflict with massive effects on the local population. The involvement of foreign law enforcement agencies, such as the American Drug Enforcement Administration, often exacerbates the issue. The committee should assess what measures are appropriate at this point in time.
