GA3 – the question of ensuring the safe return of colonial treasures to the nation of origin

Home / GA3 – the question of ensuring the safe return of colonial treasures to the nation of origin

Introduction

During the age of colonialism many objects of cultural importance were taken by the colonising powers and often ended up in private or public collections far away from their nations of origin, which happened with Indonesia in Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea, for example. The return of such objects is slowly becoming more common but is a complicated and often time-consuming process. Questions such as what exactly qualifies as a colonial treasure and what requirements can be imposed on the nation of origin with regard to proper storage and conservation are now solved on a case-by-case basis. The committee should formulate clear guidelines and requirements to ensure that this process runs more smoothly in the future.
